College Dorm Shopping on a Budget

2009 November 8

Shopping for your college dorm can be an overwhelming task and it seems that many people automatically go to the usual retail chain stores near them to get the supplies they need. Although major retailers promise great things over the summer for college savings, it does not mean they are always the best place to choose from. There are plenty of different places to try and pick up great dorm accessories at much lower prices, without the over attentive staff that insists you need more than you do or the pressure to spend more money than you allotted in your budget.

Knowing ahead of time before you go shopping what items you need can help make shopping for college go much more smoothly. Knowing what you want and what types of style you are looking for can greatly help in making choices for what type of furniture you need or what color of college dorm rugs to consider. Having this list established can also greatly help with things such as sticking to a budget or knowing what items are most important to buy.

While the popular items in the department stores look appealing, what many incoming freshmen fail to realize is that many of these products can be found at thrift stores, consignment shops, flea markets and even through online classifieds. On top of that, it’s important to remember that many of these items are more unique and innovative than those found at the big chains. Defining yourself as an individual is very important as a college student: everyone wants to have the most unique and different living space.

When shopping for items second hand or away from the usual methods, there’s a few things to take into consideration. You want to make sure that the items you buy second hand are in excellent condition, since buying anything used can have its drawbacks.Another caveat is the availability of many things in stores. Availability of items you need at big box stores can sometimes be a challenge, so be sure that you start your college dorm shopping early in order to make sure you have everything you need ahead of time. Items such as a mini dorm fridge are always in hot demand in the summer, so sometimes looking for one in the off season can be helpful also.

You can be confident in deciding to buy all of the expensive and flashy items begging to be bought by college dorm students. It’s easy to find awesome items at the thrift store or flea markets that are one of a kind, and are guaranteed to be conversation starters with the people you’ll be meeting. With a little shopping around and patience, it’s definitely possible to furnish your dorm with creative things for much less than what you would pay elsewhere.  Happy Shopping!
