Shopping For Your College Dorm

2010 May 20

Getting a head start on your college dorm room shopping might not sound like the most exciting thing to do, but getting a head start can help you make your college dorm room the perfect home away from home for you. While it would seem after high school graduation is over you still have plenty of time to get ready for preparing for school in the fall, you can see many more advantages to starting earlier.

Getting an early start will definitely give you some great advantages. Starting early will give you the chance to find hard to find items easier. It is common for many stores to start selling back to school items shortly after summer break begins. If you wait until later in the summer, it is likely that many of the items that were available in June are now sold out, you’ll likely find that many stores are out of stock of the items you want or need.

To get started, you will want to give yourself plenty of time and begin by writing a shopping list. It helps to break the list down into things that are must-haves and things that would be nice-to-haves. The more time you give yourself, it is much easier to decide what is really necessary and what would best represent your likes and preferences. Having a well laid out plan for shopping is also the best way to give you time to get great deals and take advantage of sales to save you money.

So what items do you need to get? While it will depend on your own individual preferences, most people usually need to get the same basic items. You will need to make sure you have the basic college dorm room necessities as well as any items your room will not come with, such as a bed or desk. Decor is another factor to consider, since it will help your room seem more like home. Some things like a dorm room rug can help you feel more at home, even though they may not be absolutely necessary.

While it is better to start sooner than later, it is helpful if you will have a room mate to talk with them first before buying any major purchases, since you don’t want to buy something they already have. Dorm room space can be tight, so having two of everything may actually make it too cluttered or cramped to be comfortable. This will also give you a great opportunity to get to know the person you will be sharing the space with before moving in.

It’s an exciting time to be getting ready to start college – and getting that shopping done ahead of time will help you start the new experience without too much stress or expense.
